Mold exposure rarely announces itself. It shows up as tiredness that sleep doesn't touch, a brain that feels wrapped in wool, joints that ache for no reason you can name. Those symptoms are real, and they are also common to a long list of other conditions. That's why I test instead of guessing.

When mold is on my mind for a patient, I work in two steps: test the house first, then test yourself. This ten-page guide walks you through both. For your home, I explain ERMI dust testing in plain words, including its limits, and how to find an independent inspector who only tests and doesn't sell remediation. For your body, I explain the challenged urine mycotoxin test I use in my practice, the MycoTOX Profile from Mosaic Diagnostics, which is out of pocket.

Then I walk you through 12 blood markers you can ask your provider about, what each one is, and what clinicians look at. Many of them can be ordered through Quest and LabCorp. Availability can vary by lab location and state, so check with your lab before you go. These are patterns clinicians read alongside your symptoms and history. No single marker diagnoses anything.

You'll also get a checklist and a short script for asking your provider, an honest page on insurance, and a one-page tracker to bring to every visit. Insurance coverage depends on your plan, so I show you exactly what to ask before the blood draw.

Educational content only, not medical advice.

Outcomes

  • Know why I test your home first, then your body
  • Understand ERMI and how to choose an inspector
  • Understand the MycoTOX Profile and why it's out of pocket
  • Understand 12 blood markers to ask your provider about
  • Walk in with a checklist, a script, and a tracker

What's included?

  • The symptom clues

Symptoms that may be associated with mold exposure, grouped by body system, plus a patient story about why I always ask about the house.

  • Testing your home

ERMI in plain words, what it can and can't tell you, and three questions to ask an inspector before you book.

  • Testing your body

The MycoTOX Profile from Mosaic Diagnostics, what "challenged" means, and what to know before you order. It's out of pocket.

  • The blood markers

12 markers across two pages, from C3a to HLA-DR: what each one is and what clinicians look at. No reference ranges, on purpose.

  • How to ask your provider

A tick-box checklist of every test and a short script you can use word for word.

  • Insurance, honestly

The three things coverage depends on and five calls' worth of questions to ask before you pay.

  • Your testing tracker

One page, every test: when it was ordered, the lab, coverage or cost quoted, and your questions.

Who is this for?

  • Your symptoms don't have an answer yet. Fatigue, brain fog, or aches that started or got worse after a move, a leak, or water damage, and you want to test rather than guess.
  • You want to know before you pay. You want to understand which tests are typically out of pocket and what to ask your plan before the blood draw.
  • You're preparing for a provider visit. You want a clear list, a script, and a tracker so you and your provider can decide together what fits you.
